Notice it’s illusions about starting an online home business, not delusions. That is, it’s not your fault if you misunderstand the implications of starting such a business because these illusions are fed out to you all day and every day, on the internet, television, in books and magazines.
1 It’s easy. If it were that easy, everybody would be doing it. For instance, think about putting up a website (which is not the first thing you should think about anyway). You need to have some knowledge of, and some ability in, using an HTML editor, even if it is WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) to lay out the site, perhaps use graphics, put in a sign-up form linked to an autoresponder, and writing for your visitors. All this is learnable and best done by taking action but it’s only one small part of what you need to do.
2 It’s a way of getting rich fast. This is highly unlikely – the odds are stacked against you. Most businesses don’t last past 5 years. Let’s take a figure of $100,000. To get near to this, you’d already need to know exactly what to do. In fact, have some experience in how to go about it. If you wanted to be an Olympic athlete or a world-class boxer in one year, the likelihood of doing it would not be great. Think of the dedication needed, the knowledge needed, how much guidance is required. Rather than fast, think of building a business over a period of years. If you get past 5 years and are still going and succeeding, then you’ve done well.
3 Everything is automatic. A lot of online home business opportunities push this aspect. Yes, you can automate much of your business – the more the better as it frees up time and energy. But you still have to work on your business both to maintain it and to make it grow. Things change fast on the internet so you have to be aware of what’s going on in your marketing area. You could easily be overtaken and you wouldn’t even notice. You need a relationship with your customers and be able to constantly analyse your business to keep improving.
4 Once you have a website up, you’ll have lots of visitors. Unfortunately, your website is not even a dot on the web. Imagine being light years away in the universe and looking back to the earth – you wouldn’t even see it. That means your site has to be set up to attract search engine traffic. Not only set up actually on your website, but there’s also off-site work to do, advertising it in various ways. This is a whole subject in itself.
5 You don’t have to deal with people. This is true to the extent you may not see people face to face. However, the basis of having a log-term online business is having long-term professional relationships with customers, subscribers and visitors. These are the people who will and could pay you money. You develop relationships through your various kinds of sites, your newsletter and emails, and perhaps a forum.
An online home business requires work, organisation, vision, planning and providing valuable products your customers want. All of this is possible if the illusions are left behind.

Staright answer: no work from home business opportunities will make you rich. Here are mistakes people make and you need to make sure you avoid.
1 Buy an opportunity offer for between $197 to $10,000 expecting that it will produce wealth. It can’t. You have to do something with it. No course by itself can produce wealth. This is the same attitude as the student on a college course who believes by the very fact he’s on it, he will get the qualification.
2 It’s no good just going through the actions of the course in a mechanical manner either. You have to use your initiative – fit your actions and plans to your individual business and what you individually want to achieve. You can have step by step plans for small parts of internet marketing but not a whole substantial business, all set up.
3 What are the chances you’ll be one of the few to get through the course? Not good! Like those who buy a book and don’t get past the first chapter, so with those who buy work from home business opportunities, only 10% actually use them.
4 Buying one of these courses and then complaining they don’t work, is very like a young child blaming a chair when they bump into it. The object is completely blameless. The course will not turn you into an incredibly successful internet marketer. No one opportunity can.
5 On top of all this, there is the presumption that the opportunity is wholly genuine. Well, it may be generally speaking. But if the sales copy says it’s worth thousands of dollars because you’ll make your money back quickly in a few weeks or months, then the claim is difficult to believe because it depends on your particular situation, what you’re trying to achieve and your skills. That’s in addition to the first 4 points.
6 Finally, and ultimately, it’s all down to you. Now, you may learn a lot from your work at home business opportunities but if you’re going to be successful then you have to go beyond them. You actually have to go further than them since restricting yourself to them would limit you. Also, as you go on, you have to be able to fit them into the larger context of your understanding and skills. That is, in the end only one thing will make you rich and that is YOU. Only you can learn, intitiate, take action, get over mistakes, keep going, and see what needs to be done for your plans and intentions.
Work from home business opportunities can be great to learn from but in themselves are highly unlikely to provide the one golden key, the one answer, the solution to everything in internet marketing and your own business.

The emphasis here is on business which means long-term commitment which means you’ll have to be persisitent and organised. It is not about setting up a hopefully money making website and doing a bit of marketing. However, there is the presumption that, at first at least, you’ll be working on your own. Nevertheless you must think into the future.
1 Are you ready for this? You must do proper research of your niche, product and how to go about building your business. This means, also, have you an individual style of doing business and marketing you want to develop. In other words, who do you want to be online? How will people identify you?
2 Check out your niche and its market. Especially find out how many searches for your type of products, what problems do searchers want solving, how much competition do you have and who are they?
3 Investigate what types of website there are (not just sales sites) and which ones you will need in the short and long-term. Decide whether to build them yourself or pay someone to do it.
4 Your business is always a work in progress, so have the tools to track your progress so you can see ways to improve. For example, you can have a program of split-testing every aspect of your sales page or home page over time.
5 What’s your vision for your business into the future, where do you want to get to (not just money), and what are the steps you must take to get there?
6 If you’re starting an online business by yourself, then you could just be using your own money and will finance developments from profits. However, you might need to raise finance now or later to establish a substantial business. Consider such possibilities from the start.
7 Have a marketing plan, no matter how simple initially, and develop it as you go on. For example, you may have no marketing money to start with and will need to know how to advertise and get traffic for no payment.
8 You will be responsible for running your own business, so organise your working procedures and ensure you’ve covered any legal requirements.
9 If you’re successful you’re going to want to upscale your business and the problems to be solved will upscale too: managing your time, managing other people, and keeping your motivation.
10 Finally, if you’re really successful in the years ahead, how will you deal with such a substantial business: stock market flotation? Engage in mergers? If you really do want to be successful then this is where you could end up.
Think big rather than small. Starting an online business is more than selling a couple of affiliate products. You need to be ready for continuous development.

You’re working alone building your home based internet marketing business.
As you’ll be working alone with no external job motivations, you need to get interested, develop momentum, keep going no matter what happens, and adapt and change wherever necessary to reach your goal.
Here’s what you need for a positive mindset in order to keep going when you’re starting and growing your online business, from my personal experience and understanding.
1 – You have to think BIG!
It’s not much good focusing on small things, not when
you’re trying to make your business grow. So, think of
how to make it better, faster, more automated.
While you have to recognize what level you’re starting from,
at the same time, instead of being overawed by them, you
can observe what successful businesses are doing and
so know you can do that too.
2 – Grow your knowledge with your business
Explore, evaluate, find out about other businesses,
especially in similar areas and products, to see
what makes them successful. And even looking at less
successful businesses can be useful, in order to
avoid their mistakes. As you go up levels you can see
what works beyond where you are, at the next level.
3 – Decide to decide
Every day business owners have to make decisions. This
can be at a large planning level or about a small ad.
Either way, decisions taken positively, with the right
knowledge, show that problems can be overcome on a daily
basis.
4 – Do something and take action
Getting knowledge, taking decisions about what to do
and making plans are all to no avail unless you take
action. Those with a weak mindset can often put off this
step, going round in circles of procrastination. But
action gives impetus and moves the business on,
creating a virtuous circle.
5- Keep going
Never, ever give up. Most people give up at the first
problems they meet. But a positive mindset sees problems
as an opportunity to grow knowledge, get experience,
move the business on. Not stopping is a more
powerful trait than intelligence.
6 – Keep asking questions
There’s always more to learn, and that improved learning
means you keep moving forward. It’s not just asking
other people questions but also asking yourself – about
what sort of business you want, where you want it to go,
how you’ll get there. Questions are on-going, not just
one-off.
7 – Make sure you have success every day
The big successes don’t happen by themselves but are
the consequence of many, many smaller (preferably
daily) successes. So, build these in – after all,
what’s a small success to one person can be very
significant to someone else. Like, keeping your site online!:)
8 – Focus!
You’ll have heard of this, especially the need to focus, keep
your attention on one thing at a time. Those who fail, jump
about from one offer to another, from one problem to another.
But here’s something I never see mentioned: you do have to
shift your focus from tactic/small task to your big picture
regularly. This is to keep an on-going connection between
them – too many people get stuck at one or the other level.
There we have it – a positive mindset to create your home based internet marketing business is all about building and maintaining momentum through learning, questioning , actions and focus.
